MUST

All you salmiakki fans are in luck because today we have a salmiakki triple-feature.  I found three varieties of MUST salmiakki: Touch of Sea, Moods of Black, and Dark Shots.

MUST

Without further delay, let’s get to sampling these quality confections.

Touch of Sea

Because ordinary salmiakki just doesn’t taste salty enough, I was happy to see that the fine folks at Malaco have thoughtfully added sea salt to their Touch of Sea variety.  Cautiously, I tried a piece, and astonishingly I found it quite edible.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s one of the saltiest things I’ve ever tasted, but I was not even close to spitting this one out.  In fact, I might even be willing to snack on these if I have a glass of water near by.

 Moods of Black

Next up is Moods of Black.  Judging from the packaging, this looks like a standard salmiakki candy with nothing crazy added to it like sea salt or chili powder.  Feeling confident, I opened the package and tried a piece.  I’ll be honest, this one completely met my expectations; licorice: check, creeping salty salmiac flavor: check.  There’s not much more to be said about it.

 Dark Shots

The last entry today is Dark Shots.  These candies instantly reminded me of milk duds, which I actually like, so I had high hopes.  The outside did not taste unpleasant, and this only made me more confident that I would like these too, so I took the plunge and bit into one.  It actually tasted pretty good… at first.  After a few seconds, an unpleasant taste started to grow out of nowhere, eventually overwhelming everything else, and I was forced to spit it out.  I can’t describe the taste, because I’ve never had anything quite like it.  I really, truly can’t put it into words.

To wrap things up, my favorite of these three is definitely the Touch of Sea, but Moods of Black is also quite edible.  Dark Shots, however, hide a terrible secret in their center that makes them inedible.

  1. Actually those Dark Shots won the "Salmiakkifinlandia"-prize this year. So it is the salmiakki product of the year in Finland.
    Absolutely fabulous candy. Love it!

  2. Heh, the longer I read this blog, the more the reviews shift to "edible". So it must be that salmiakki is an aquired taste? :)

  3. Hmm.. For some weird reason, after reading this, I got feeling that I must go shop on my way to home from work and buy some Dark Shots :)

... I haven't tasted those before, but I think they culd be great. I do like GOOD salmiak taste.

In Finland we have "Lakriktsi" and "Salmiakki", those are qutie quite same, but not even close.
Salmiakki must have 'ammonium chloride' taste, I think you call it 'salty' because Salmiakki is called 'Salty liquorice' in english.

So 'salty' is really not salt, it is ammonium chloride. It is VERY important to see difference in those two. If there is 'salt and liquorice' it is NOT the same as 'ammonium chloride and liquorice'.

You REALLY should try 'apteekin salmiakki' too bad they didn't send you that. That really has real salmiak (ammonium chloride) taste. If you want/need I would send yuo some :)

  7. I think you're supposed to suck on the Dark Shots and let them slowly melt in your mouth. They truly are pretty inedible if you bite them.

  8. Even Arizona Goof likes those "Dark shots".

  9. Everytime I read a new post here I get a craving for some Salmiakki (or Salmiak as we call it in Sweden).

Btw. how can you not like something that is also used in fireworks and explosives? ;)

  10. The idea behind soft filled salmiak is to NOT bite them. You're supposed to suck on them until there is a tiny hole into the center which allows the flavor to trickle out and mingle with the outer sweetness. Mind you, I'm not sure that the Dark Shot is one of those.

  11. Dark Shots is not one of those you suck like Tyrkis Peppers. So far its my one absolute favorite salmiakki product, too bad quite expensive compared to most of the others.

  12. Dark Shot is nowhere near for example Tsaukki Taukki which has truly unholy (read: painfully delicious) powder embedded within.

After reading I tried all these and Touch of Sea and Dark Shots are REALLY good.

  16. MUST salmiak taste great! I like how the packages are quite small so you don't get to eat too much of them. And the taste is quite good, something that they really put some effort into.

Touch of Salt is quite ok but I got a bit bored of the taste after a while.

So my favorite is now Moods of Black thats really a great taste.

Dark Shot is ok but I don't like the composition so much.

  17. Pretty please, guys sent you tons of unedible food-like substance. Least you could do is write some of your thoughts while tasting those.

  18. I just found this blog, and based on this I had to try the Dark Shots (found them from local store). And frankly, I was really disappointed. I was expecting some overwhelming strong taste, but they are just normal, very mild tasting salmiac-liquorice. Very good of course, but nothing extraordinary. And they leave nice, soft, sweet aftertaste to mouth. Luckily I bought also some Dracula Pillers, they still have the strong salmiac first bite I remember from my childhood, although that does not last nearly as long as I remembered..

  19. Absolutely love Dark Shots.

Only down-side: they come in too small package.

  20. I agree with the last anonymous, Dark Shots is my favourite candy and I menee get enough! They are quite mild in my opinion.
