Fatalii Gourmet Naga Morich Salmiakkitoffee

It's that time of year again: gingerbread men, rum balls, eggnog, and Christmas-tree shaped sugar cookies. At least, in normal parts of the world. In Finland, December signifies the special time of year where parents torture their kids by giving extra terrible salty licorice treats.

My dear friend Matti Nikki decided that it was high time that I experience a Finnish Christmas, and sent me this early gift.

Matti suggested that I might even like it. "It's scored high on the recent Finnish Salmiakki Association's salmiakki picnic (3rd place)," he wrote, "even though the reviewers all thought the flavor of salmiakki was overpowered by the much stronger chili."

Well, I guess the facial expression featured on the wrapper is how Finns express deliciousness. I shared my thoughts for this special treat in a video:

It's not the absolute worst I've ever had, but it certainly earned a caustic rating.

  1. I guess "Fatalii" was supposed to be a warning :)

  2. Awww. I was hoping you could handle it. I suppose chili is out of the question. I'll have to see if I can find any tar flavored salmiakki for the next care package. I know there are small vendors making that stuff out there, but it can be tricky to find the really good stuff...

  3. You should try some dutch salmiak. We have salmiak coins, salmiak lollipops, straws filled with salmiak, saucers filled with salmiak, salmiak pastilles and much, much more.

    1. Dubbel Zout FTW!

Too bad the nearest place I can find it is Grand Rapids, Michigan. Then again, a kilogram bag of Dubbel Zout lasts a good long time...

  4. Hot? You're kidding! It's only " -- one of the hottest chilli peppers known."

  5. I would like to send you salmiakki products, but preferably something that you have not tried yet.

Do you have a comprehensive list anywhere of which products you have tested already?

  6. That looks delicious though I don't care for chili.

  7. I should send some more salmiakki to Alex. There's this one candy I absolutely must send, but it's only available in 2kg boxes or pick'n'mix .. and I have a sort of bad feeling about sending unlabeled plastic bags of "hey you gotta try this stuff!" pills of "ammonium salts" to him ... the customs and the police might get interested :(

    1. If you do try to find some of those smaller salmiak squares, not in every store, but they do have nice strong flavor... ;D

Also I missed my change to get some liquid Haganol from Lidl, dunno if there is any of that still left... Liquid Salmiak... ;D

    1. It's also available in chilikauppa.fi if you want to buy some other chili goodness at the same time. Their front page says if you contact them with email they'll ship internationally too.
