Fazer Pantteri Black Shot

Unfortunately, after sharing salmiac with some of my friends on a few different occasions, no one is willing to try any unfamiliar foodstuff from me, let alone more salmiac. Thank you Finland for giving people yet another reason to dislike me.

While I haven't made any new friends lately, there was a new chap at the office who hadn't yet experienced the joy of Finnish "treats". And I figured, what better way ruin the relationship with my new coworker that with some Fazer Pantteri Black Shot?

For those of you who don't speak Finlandese, "Pantteri" actually translates to "Panther Turds", and the gooey "black shot" center is either a pre- or partially-digested glob of salmiac gel. I can't tell, either from the writing on the back of the bag, the smell, or the taste.

And speaking of the taste – it's actually not so bad, at least relative to the texture. I'll let Patrick explain in this odd-aspect-ration video. Next time, I'll flip my phone sideways.

Although Patrick wasn't a big fan, he hasn't quite experienced the full range of salmiac. But I have, and on the scale of all things salmiac, this earns the well-respected edible rating.

  1. By the way the language is actually Finnish, not Finlandese and Pantteri means panther or leopard. Great blog anyway!

    2. Interwebz is with a capital, due to the fact it's a proper noun. GET IT RIGHT, GEEZE!

  2. The new Volcano variant of Tyrkisk Peber has some kind of jellified filling as well, so it might be the next big thing in the world of salmiac. I personally still prefer the powdered ammonium chloride you get in the center of the original Tyrkisk Peber, and as a coating on Dracula Piller. I'll probably give Black Shot a go, since Tyrkisk Peber Volcanoes are pretty good if you want some milder stuff for a change.

  4. Black shots are one of our favorites, glad you got this far!

Btw: have you tried to re-taste any of your first inedible salmiakki's (if any left) to see if your tolerance towards salmiakki taste has increased? :-)
If there's change in result then probably you should calibrate your scale...

  5. If you'd like to make some friends for a change give them some Alku candies. I think that's a bit of cheating though, since I'm quite certain those are only liquorice and not salmiakki.

  6. Too mild for my taste.

  9. Brilliant blog, Alex. I've been following your adventures in the world of salmiakki on and off for almost couple of years. I'm a salmiakki lover myself but today I tasted my very first salmiakki which even I, one of the most devoted salmiakki fans ever, couldn't get in to my system. This evil thing is called "Naga Morich Salmiac Fudge". If you enjoy chilis then you know instantly what I'm talking about. I'm talking about scoville unit > 1 000 000 wrapped in a black and deathly looking but surprisingly soft and smooth salmiac fudge. I dare you to eat it!
Don't know who sends these things to you but please, whoever they are: get a man one these Naga Morcihes. I got mine from Kluuvi's shopping mall in Helsinki. There's some country style, organic food market on the ground floor (weird place to get this thing, I know).
I also recommend Alex you post something just BEFORE you taste it so we can light a candel for you. I'm quite convinced there will be no postings after the first bite...

    1. You mean the wonderful combination of fatalii gourmet and sahlman? That stuff is AWESOME, actually it's so good I think Alex would like it as well. I passed some around at work and everyone liked it, several people were asking for more even after it ran out. Then again, each of them only got very little pieces of it :)

I bought mine from chilikauppa.fi but it doesn't seem to be available anymore!! ... so, unfortunately I cannot obtain any to send to Alex. Who's going to send some to him? Contact me and I'll happily split the mailing costs with you.

    2. Update: chilikauppa seems to respond to mails really fast, the wonderful stuff is back for sale! Now, let's see... :P

  11. Try these, next:

At least one of them falls into category of salmiakki-candy.

  12. Pantteri Black Shot is okay as far as salmiakki goes but I'm actually getting Missä X for a Polish colleague as part of a candy trade. It will be a nice surprise among the sweet candies (fudge, chocolate). Missä X is pure bliss, and not even all salmiac, and I'm sure that as a well cultured person he will appreciate the taste!

  13. got to love this blog!!! i have NEVER heard so well-placed or well-thought insults from any foreigner, usually you have to live in finland to hate it that much :D but that said, pantteri translates only as panther, the animal, and knowing us finns (alcoholics whole bunch) that black shot most likely comes from salmiakkikossu, a salmiac-tasting strong alcohol that's sold in shots in every bar. even so, i lke your attitude towards our national candy and the nation itself, keep these coming!
    greetings from "funland"
