Rainbow Tulinen Salmiakki (Eldig Salmiak)

I had a hard time identifying the maker of this particular brand of salmiak. That's usually not a good sign. Salmiak is bad enough on its own, and I can only imagine what the Pepper, M.D. of salmiak is like. I guess today's my lucky day, as I don't have to immagine anymore.

As a side note: leave it to generic salmiak to define "rainbow" as containing three colors: Green, Red, and Black. I'm pretty sure the latter is not even considered a color.

The Tulien Salmiakki started off like a normal hard candy: mostly flavorless with a touch of sweet. That's also a troubling sign for salmiac.

With a minute, I was overcome with a unique sensation, almost like that of an impending sneeze. As I continued "enjoying" this candy, a numbness started spreading throughout my mouth. That was followed by a slight tingling sensation. This is not the experience I'd expect from candy... which is yet another troubling sign.

Things went downhill quickly. My entire tongue went numb (yet, somehow started hurting), and the tingling sensation started spreading. In the exact opposite manner that menthol clears the sinuses, the Tulien led to a difficulty breathing. The numbing pain spread to my gums, teeth, and, well, just about everywhere else.

And then I bit down. Whatever unholy substance was amalgamated into this candy's outershell was in its purist form in the center. Pain doesn't even begin to describe what that sensation was like. Without bothering to look for a napkin, I expectorated this horrid concoction as quickly as possible. It took a full ten minutes for the pain to dissipate as well. Clearly, this candy earns the caustic label.

  1. Rainbow is the maker, in fact. It's a cheap store brand, doesn't have anything to do with the name of the product, which is simply "fiery salmiak."

  3. I love these. Why do people dislike salmiak so much? ;_;

  5. It's Tulinen Salmiakki not Tulien Salmiakki. You got couple typos in the text. Rainbow is just cheap store brand as another anon pointed out.

That green one dosn't look so fiery, are you sure you tasted all colour variants?

  12. I wonder if these were the ones that had some red pepper within. Even a seasoned feeder like myself, need to stop after consuming half a bag of those. But after a pint of water, you're fine to continue.

  13. I think there is some pepper or chili inclueded in those babies...

As said, Rainbow is the brand, cheap label of S-group, other major player in Finlands retail-industry.

  14. Just so you know, that "RAINBOW" is just a trademark. One that is an umbrella to everything from toilet cleaners to raisins.
It is best interpreted as: ${product}.

  15. I love salmiak. The hotter, the better... But these weren't tasty at all. I will never buy them again. I prefer Tyrkisk Peber.

  16. I read this and though I might like these..

Typical American hysterics. These are just your basic run-of-the-mill stuff. Quality stuff, too, which is surprising, considering it's a store brand.

The red ones contain pepper. I suppose the green ones contain some aniseed oil mentioned on the backside of the bag and a little pepper.

  17. Well.. Tried those today. Damn weak salmiak.. :(

  18. I haven't tried these yet. The Original Turkish Pepper "Turkinpippuri" are the legendary ones. For a short while there used to be a chili-flavoured Tyrkish Peber candy bad around. I wish they made those again.

  19. I remember the chili variant of Turkinpippuri! It was insane!

    Oh, how I miss it.

  20. These rainbow salmiakkis most likely contained a mix of ammonium chloride (the good stuff) and chili (for extra fire). The chili would largely explain the numbing and overflowing fiery sensation when bitten.

Personally, I prefer pure, not too diluted ammonium chloride found in the traditional "Turkin pippuri" candies.

And for the record, I've had a spit-out-as-fast-as-you-can experience with candy too. It was a strawberry flavoured candy with super strong chili blended into the mix. Nothing to do with salmiakki aka. ammonium chloride though.

  21. You crush those little candies, then add them to vodka or koskenkorva and you have a shot called 8 ball. It's good!!

  22. This is propably the worst candy ever. The topping tastes like sh*t, u should try Tyrkisk Peber ("Turkin pippuri" in finnish and "Turkish Pepper" in eglish), they're like the sweets of Gods. Also I noticed you haven't tasted Noitapilli. Those two are propably the best salmiakkis and also classics when it comes it.

  23. I guess Finland is the only country where blood pressure medicine comes with a warning: "Do not eat salmiakki!" Well...it's good stuff - what can I say! :) Shouldn't read this blog while working alone in the office and with no salmiakki! I had to leave to a near store to get some. Salmiakki is highly addictive!
Great subject for a blog! :)

  25. These are fun to crush and mix with whipped cream. Tastes quite good :). Or you can just mix it with vanilla ice cream.

  27. I bought yesterday Pirkka Tulinen Salmijakki. Well, black and blue were quite ok, but the red one was real poison.

  28. I was once hospitalized for eating one of these. But on the bright side I was diagnosed with asthma after that.

Personally I still think there should be a warning label: "Inhaling salmiac powder may cause pain and breathing difficulties. Do not inhale when the powder is released!"
